However, the market trends were moving too fast to allow for a long-enduring success of Saturn auto models. From complex to more complex, this is the tendency and the fashion trend that rules the car market. This only means that car concepts changed, integrating a transition to more surprising designs, with futuristic features. Thus, the optional part became standard in modern cars as we are talking about higher and higher safety and comfort expectations. In a nutshell, Saturn auto producers had to find a way to reclaim their dominance in the business in order to enjoy long-lasting success.

Since 2004, Saturn auto offers grew in variety with the launching of new series by General Motors. Plus, the interest in hybrid car also got higher, given the increased awareness of the environmental degradation closely related to car pollution. Toxic emissions are definitely lower even with the Saturn auto vehicles powered by gas, even if oil remains the primary energy source. Plug in car options are not available for the moment, but in the not so distant future they could bring vehicle autonomy and the exclusive use of electrical engines or batteries as propulsion means.

Saturn auto options provided all the necessary comfort: they were neither basic nor spartan, on the contrary the ride was more than satisfactory. This is the reason why Saturn cars were held in such respect on the market, since they put people first. Impeccable customer service was the advantage that General Motors had over the other car producers. Maybe they don’t rally to the latest trends in car fashion, but at least they stay focused on the needs of the individual driver. Saturn auto choices are therefore still valid nowadays with options for all pockets providing average to luxurious products.

Saturn Car

December 28th, 2008

The first Saturn car designs to hit the market were the S Series that included sedans, wagons and coupes. They stood apart even within the wide General Motors range of products by the use of new special platforms and plastic panels included for a superior durability and resistance against denting. The entire Saturn car division was produced in a single plant in Tennessee. Back in the 90s these vehicles were the most fuel-efficient of their time with a forty miles per gallon consume for manual transmissions. Plus, depending on the model, a Saturn car could offer somewhere between 85 and 124 horsepower.

The new millennium didn’t bring much novelty in the Saturn car design; the producers worked a little bit at the interior look, but it is obvious that within the GM family this brand was underexploited and even neglected. With lower sales attracting the leaders’ attention, General Motors finally made a move in the direction of launching a new Saturn car division: the L Series. The concept relied on the use of the sedan to revive interest in the brand: thus the Vue and the Ion followed together with a green line application in the form of a hybrid car this time.

If compared to the first Saturn car models, present-day Saturn vehicles have changed and improved a lot. If plastic panels had been such a success in the past, they are now history and replaced by the new steel body panels that are considered both safe and conventional. Moreover, any modern Saturn car is likely to bear the marks of the European GM models like the Opel. Some users have complained about the loss of the originality and the stylish polishing of European cars, but speaking in overall terms, one cannot overlook or neglect the serious improvements made not only in design but in quality and refinement too.

Liquid Found On Saturn

December 28th, 2008

The depth of these pools or lakes of liquid found on Saturn’s satellite could be a few or hundreds of feet deep. Infrared scanning by Cassini spacecraft allowed an approximation of the features. Yet, the main question remains as whether this planet can support life or not. Another Saturn moon, Enceladus, revealed cold water geysers issuing from liquid reservoirs lying a little below the frozen soil. Could such discoveries start a new era in the planetary exploration programs? Though life is difficult to imagine in the cold conditions of this icy world, right beneath the surface of Enceladus, all the premises indicate that life is more than possible.

This is the reason why the liquid found on Saturn’s Enceladus set the course for new investigations for life in the solar system. Plus, the other prerequisite for life existence on Enceladus, organic materials, is also met: there is methane, ethane, carbon dioxide and several others. Last but not least, near the thermal vents, deep down in Saturn’s center, the temperature could also create a favorable environment for the appearance and development of life forms.

The liquid found on Saturn’s moons makes the most exciting discovery in the last twenty five years, since volcanic activity was identified on one of Jupiter’s satellites. Though the source of the water geysers could not be spotted by the camera of the spacecraft the water and ice sprays were very visible in the sunlight, in the polar region of Enceladus. The same warm-icy model in the structure of comets applies to this liquid found on Saturn’s satellite, Enceladus, since the geysers were identified as a combination of ice and hot water vapors. Then, there must be liquid water under the surface!

Saturn Outlook

December 27th, 2008

A premium crossover SUV, Saturn Outlook is a revolutionary car that relies on the new Lambda platform designed by General Motors. Saturn Outlook has attracted customers’ attention by its low price as compared to other similar products on the market such as the Chevrolet or GMC Acadia models. The car comes with a slight engine differentiation in its two variants: thus the XE offers 270 horsepower while XR provides five more horsepower in addition.

Both types of Saturn Outlook include the six-speed automatic transmission and come either with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options. The seating setting is in three rows, but there are multiple features in the design allowing for the compression of space either by folding or by slipping forward thus allowing more room for loads. The concept is also designed in such a way so as to allow the adjustment of the space between the rows of seats according to the passengers’ necessities.

Saturn Outlook is produced in Michigan, US, together with the rest of the GM models relying on the Lambda platform. The sales have registered an increase from the launching of the model in 2006, with a market stagnation in 2008 due to the international car sales drops. It terms of safety measures, Saturn Outlook has sport side impact airbags that were very well rated at the crash tests. Some of the crash safety test results were released later than others after the checking period.

The Saturn Outlook models are available with Saturn dealerships all over the United States. Mention must be made that there is usually a stock limit, and since this car is considered pretty expensive, large stocks are not acceptable. Therefore, you may have to pay and wait for your Saturn Outlook if the dealer doesn’t have it available. One detail requires clarifications, Saturn Outlook like other cars in its category could prove costly to maintain, not to mention fuel.

Hence, even if the price of Saturn Outlook may be attractive and you have a big family to ride with, it is still a matter of practicality to analyze the maintenance costs and the fuel budget you’ll have to allocate each month. There have been cases when people had their cars sold by banks through auctions because of lack of cash to pay taxes or mortgages. Consequently, this is not the case with Saturn Outlook only, but it makes common sense advice to caution.

Saturn Sc2

December 26th, 2008

Saturn SC2 is the short name from the sports coupe level of the first division of Saturn vehicles produced at the beginning of the 90s. The introduction of the S Series by General Motors was a marketing stratagem to diminish the impact of the Japanese imports on the American market. With the success reputed by Saturn SC2, Japan and Taiwan actually started selling these vehicles on their internal markets, which only proves that the reputation GM got for the Saturn S Series was not void of content. Though no spectacular adjustments were made to the Saturn SC2 in time, the year 1999 saw the biggest of upgrades.

Saturn SC2 got a little lateral door often called the suicide door on the side of the driver. For the coupe design, this additional feature was a big change as it was a sure innovation in the production of sports cars. This kind of door had only been used in the manufacturing of extended cab pickup trucks before. Saturn SC2 was produced with little modifications afterwards until 2003 when General Motors replaced the S Series and launched their new sports car, Saturn Ion. The production of this latter model also came to a halt in 2007 as well when GM chose a new market approach.

Saturn SC2 was also remarkable by the manual transmission that triggered a very efficient fuel consume. At the time when it was launched, the engine of Saturn SC2 required one gallon of fuel for forty miles according to the highway tests performed for the car. This first engine was rated at only 124 horsepower, but in 1995 improvements were made to the initial SC model: thus, the producer added a lower front bumper and a trunk lid reflector, not to mention that the interior was also redesigned. It was the second generation of Saturn SC2 that saw changes in exterior concept that now focused on rather curve lines.

According to reviews Saturn SC2 was not very different from SC1, the latter only got black outside mirrors while the SC2 variant had them colored. Saturn SC2 came with standard fog lamps, anti-break lock was optional and it also had some kind of traction control. Then, in terms of manual transmission, Saturn SC2 and SC1 were identical, and the same similarity was preserved in the dashboard look, daytime running lights and even wheelbase. Improvements were tributary to the Saturn sedan and station wagon designs.

Sailor Saturn

December 26th, 2008

A main character in the Sailor Moon meta-series, Sailor Saturn, alias Hotaru Tomoe in her civilian appearances, is a schoolgirl touched by a serious health problem. Besides the seizures specific to the ailment, Sailor Saturn is the last of the solar system soldiers to discover the amplitude of her powers. She makes a great team with Chibiusa and Usagi, two other main characters, who are her best friends. In day-to-day life, Sailor Saturn is not on good terms with her classmates, both because of her seizures and the strange powers she has. Sailor Saturn is present in the manga and the animated series of Sailor Moon and details on her life are usually revealed in the manga form preponderantly rather than in the animations.

If in one version she has cybernetics attachments on her body, after her rebirth in the animated versions, she is completely human. Differences in plot and character evolutions vary from one presentation form to another; thus, Sailor Saturn fluctuates in terms of age for instance. First she is 13 then she gets reborn and is pictured as a five-year old girl, only to grow into a 13 year old all over again. As for her hidden powers, Sailor Saturn finds revelation only when Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Pluto use their talismans together and make her resonate.

Though possessing a planetary destructive weapon, Sailor Saturn is a world savior and a redeemer, allowing mankind to get reborn by putting an end to the destructions caused by the Silver Millennium kingdom. After the rebirth and the assumption of a new life, Sailor Saturn is a lot more vivid and definitely happier. She wants to be a nurse some day, particularly as she has minor healing powers. In philosophical terms, Sailor Saturn stands for the all necessary doom: without death there can be no rebirth, thus, her weapon, the Silence Glaive can throw a world into complete destruction or annihilation only to be reborn a lot purer afterwards.

As the manga series advances, Sailor Saturn gains more and more powers every day. Her uniform seems to reflect the changes in her statute, since after each major event, a detail is added to indicate the modifications. It surely takes one a lot of patience to follow episode after episode, particularly since one can easily lose track of the events with all the things happening in this world of super heroes that are anything but common. Present in Japanese and English versions of the series, Sailor Saturn makes the picture of this entertainment form complete.

Saturn Dealer

December 25th, 2008

The help and the advice provided for the average user by a Saturn dealer can be crucial for the choice of a car model. Dealers are the ones to give convincing info to the clients concerning the technical features of the car, the warranty and the usage suitability. Even so, the most important detail about this business is the price. A Saturn dealer will provide most of the models produced by General Motors in the Saturn category, or if the product is not in stock they will establish the terms under which you can get it in the shortest of times. Trade allowance influences the price negotiation between the Saturn dealer and the client.

In case you contact a Saturn dealer in order to purchase a hybrid vehicle, there are a few things you should know. First of all, a Saturn hybrid is a bit more expensive than regular fuel-powered vehicles, but there are tax allowances that are granted for the purchase of an ecological car. The Saturn dealer could arrange for a drive test so that you can see for yourself the way the car rides, its technical performances and the fuel-saving properties when accelerating or slowing down. Dealership therefore involves a complex range of services that are ultimately aiming at convincing the customer to buy from them.

In recent years, a new tendency has been noticed in terms of car purchase: people are no longer changing their cars every three years, but they keep their old cars for a longer period of time. From the perspective of a Saturn dealer, the success of one car model on the market does not depend exclusively on the discount they make. Car sales are the result of complex social processes that include income, mortgages, bank debts and the actual necessity to get a new car. A Saturn dealer could also provide older models, possibly used cars or those sold in public auctions.

Where can one find a reliable Saturn dealer? If you do not have any dealership in your neighborhood, you can check the Internet to find the closest Saturn dealer to your home. Though most of the time, a car purchase involves an inspection or a drive test, there are clients who purchase used cars from auctions on the basis of the technical sheet only. Credentials are important for the choice of the Saturn dealer; they need to present some form of accreditation or certification from General Motors that they are authorized to sell the Saturn brand.

Saturn Sky

December 24th, 2008

Saturn Sky surely makes a surprising differentiation from the traditional Saturn car concept: we are talking about the first sports car in the division with an immense market success. Saturn Sky is a very new brand in the Saturn family, even if it shares some of its features with Pontiac Solstice and Opel GT: this is the case with the Kappa automobile platform that is present with all the three GM designs.

Saturn Sky comes with 18 inch wheels and two engine options: you can go for the 177 horsepower Ecotec LE5 engine or the turbocharged one that produces no less than 260 horsepower. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available including five speeds, with such features interfering with the cost of the car. The model produced in the Red Line is surely more expensive reaching up to around $30,000; yet the five speed automatic variant is almost $5,000 cheaper.

What is there additional in the Red Line Saturn Sky? There is a superior suspension over the standard quality provided by the basic Saturn Sky model, plus, the stability control is also upgraded. Dual exhausts, unique leather design in the interior with special tachometer and digital control panel are just a few other features of the Saturn Sky luxury variant available since the end of 2006. Add on options are found with the dealers in case you want to enhance some specificity of a standard Saturn Sky, and this applies very well to the improvement of the suspension.

Conversions of the Saturn Sky into more powerful vehicles is well accomplished by Mallet Cars, Ohio who have registered exceptional results with the adjustment of the car with a V8 engine. Thus the resulting horsepower is not lower than 400 with the turbocharged versions going way beyond 750 horsepower. Other possible Saturn Sky configurations apply to the torque or the brakes that can be replaced with some custom-made ones.

Furthermore, Saturn Sky is also subject to electric conversions, or at least efforts are being made in that direction by teams interested in making it more profitable as an autonomous vehicle. Just imagine what it would be like to benefit from the advantages of a sports car while still eliminating fuel consume. Needless to say that a V8 Saturn Sky engine has a high gas consume, which is surely alarming for environmentalists. Given the increasing necessity to use the planet resources wisely, time may come when fuel-powered engines be banned from car production.

Who Discovered Saturn

December 24th, 2008

Who discovered Saturn? Was this planet known to the ancients or is it modern science that brought it to our attention? The truth is that in the antiquity people had a far better knowledge of the sky map than we have today, and it is possible that they were familiar with Saturn by means of primitive telescopes. Most often, Galileo is recognized as the scientist who discovered Saturn in 1610, as in his descriptions he even gave an explanation for the rings. What he saw resembled some little ears on either side of the planet, and he presumed they were globes. Yet, later on, the white rings were discovered and have remained the most spectacular solar system formation ever since.

The globe explanation given by Galileo started from a confusion he didn’t know how to explain. He was the person who discovered Saturn, but at the same time he thought there were three planets, not one. The mystery of the rings was clarified in 1655 when Christiaan Huygens realized that what Galileo called globes were actually rings, but their structure became apparent twenty years later with the discovery made by Giovanni Domenico Cassini. He was the one to launch the theory that Saturn’s rings were broken or discontinuous, consisting of small individual parts.

Presently we know that the rings consist of ice, rocks and other interplanetary debris, which only proves that the early theories were right. Who discovered Saturn then? A fair conclusion is that this part of our solar system gradually revealed itself to our eyes, but the discovery is not by far complete. Every year seems to bring something new for us to discover: thus, more than forty of Saturn’s moons have become known, some of them with potential conditions to sustain life. Thus the question is not about who discovered Saturn, but what is there more to discover?

The tribute paid to Galileo as the person who discovered Saturn is obvious, but he was not the only one. The probe which sent the first pictures from Saturn was called Cassini after the scientist who understood and theorized the structure of the rings around this planet. Even so, there are many other people who are currently taking part to space exploration projects; maybe their names are not written in history, but their contribution is just as great and important. With every space conquest, there is one other step in the direction of learning more about the universe.

Saturn Ion

December 23rd, 2008

Launched in 2003, Saturn Ion is one of the many car models manufactured by General Motors; it came as a replacement for the Saturn S Series, the first line of production since the beginnings of the division. According to statistics, Saturn Ion satisfied customers more than any other compact car available on the American market, and this is the reason why it was sold for such a long time, till 2007 when it was replaced by Saturn Astra. This vehicle relied on the famous General Motors Delta platform and it came with a standard DOHC Ecotec I4 engine that gave 140 horsepower.

The position of the instrument panel was pretty striking in the interior design of Saturn Ion, thus instead of being located behind the steering wheel as it happens for most other car concepts, it occupied a frontal position in the center of the dashboard. The Saturn Ion varieties available on the market included the coupe and the sedan. The novelty this car brought came from the gearbox that allowed room for five forward gears adjusted to the regular manual gearbox. The ratios were conceived in such a way so as to improve the acceleration time and make fuel consume efficient. Moreover, with Saturn Ion, heat was no longer a problem for the planetary gear set.

An upgraded Saturn Ion variant appeared in 2004 as part of the Red Line designed by General Motors. The model was imagined as a sportier car with a more powerful engine of 205 horsepower, a stiffer suspension and re-valved shock absorbers; the model relied on a 2.0 liter Ecotec engine known as the LSJ. In the same year, General Motors also launched a limited edition of Saturn Ion 3 that had all sorts of additional improvements in terms of interior and exterior design. The price was higher, but the cosmetic look was surely different. Only three color options were available: black onyx, chili pepper red and electric blue.

Until 2007, several improvements were made in terms of Saturn Ion engine power and interior design. Some of the varieties were also discontinued because of various technical issues that made their reliability questionable: this was the case with the Aisin model. It was during this time that Saturn Ion gained a negative reputation because of the bad publicity received from discontented reviewers. General Motors announced an upgrade with the re-launched Saturn Ion in 2008, pictures of the new model even circulated on the Internet, but eventually the manufacturer dropped the concept and turned to a re-badging. It was time for Saturn Astra to emerge.

Saturn Struts

December 22nd, 2008

Saturn struts have been under debate on many Internet forums and in lots of magazines, they make car driving a lot more comfortable with the contribution they bring to the suspension system. The interesting fact is that Saturn struts cover a complex and pretty wide range of vehicle components among which we need to mention the spring seats, the shock absorber, the coil springs and the steering knuckle. Besides the spring, the strut is the element that bears the weight of the vehicle including the passengers and the loads they add. Saturn struts are designed to make the connection between the upper strut bearing and the lower ball joint.

The result of this combination is the possibility of the assembly mentioned above to move when the steering wheel is turned. Saturn struts therefore have a truly crucial function for the operation of your car, and in order to maintain this very efficient suspension system, make sure to check the struts at least once a year when you have the inspection for the wheels alignment. The mechanisms the most exposed to decay in the Saturn struts assembly are the shock absorbers. They wear out in time, thus lowering the driving quality: an experienced driver can sense the change in the control and the handling of the vehicle.

Among the signs indicating Saturn struts deterioration you’ll notice bouncing, swaying, nose driving every time you press the brake as well as some steering difficulties. The moment you notice any of these, it’s time to look for replacements. Experts advise that the Saturn struts be changed completely; if you replace only the shock absorbers, the reliability of the function could be slightly impaired. There are plenty of dealers who offer Saturn struts replacements, make sure you always purchase original items in order to benefit from a perfect match.

In case you are not convinced about one seller or another, there is always the possibility to look for Saturn struts top sellers. They’ll give you the best prices, the most advantageous delivery conditions and even replacement services if necessary or possible. The periodical check up of the Saturn struts and the fact that they are subject to wearing out doesn’t indicate a poor car rating; it is only natural that during use the car systems should interact with each other and sometimes even fail when overused. Hence, do not fear that the Saturn struts on your vehicle will require change within a year after purchase; the periodical test is just a safety procedure.

Saturn Aura

December 21st, 2008

The model to have outsold Saturn Vue SUV is Saturn Aura, a mid-sized vehicle manufactured under the General Motors brand. The popularity of the concept became apparent in 2006 when it was made public at the New York Auto Show, and though it was meant as a replacement for the Saturn L-series, Saturn Aura brings a breath of fresh air to the entire Saturn collection. The result of this reorientation is an advantage of American cars over European imports particularly since in recent years the focus has fallen on the latter in the United States. Saturn Aura thus rivals with its distant relative: the European Opel Vectra.

The standard Saturn Aura includes folding mirrors and side marker lights, and these design features are clearly an imitation of European car design. The other aesthetic details make Saturn Aura a really pleasant car with 17 or 18 inch wheels and all season tires according to the XR or XE models. The changes in decoration style are obvious in the design of the interior too, Saturn Aura provides the possibility to choose the saddle leather and back seat radio control. Even so, despite the nice offer in the standard model, Saturn Aura has been criticized for the quality of the materials used in the interior.

As for the technical characteristics of the Saturn Aura standard models, there is an assisted break system for all the four wheel disk brakes, heated seats and comprehensive front and lateral airbags, automatic steering control and stability control as well as remote vehicle start. Saturn Aura also provides 224 horsepower for a 3.5 liter V6 engine. The difference between Saturn Aura XR and XE is obvious with the properties of the suspensions: thus those of the XE model are softer, while the XR model includes sportier and a bit more rigid suspensions. Last but not least, this concept difference is also relevant for the price of the cars in dealer shops.

Saturn Aura is also available in the hybrid eco form following the green line specificity. It relies on a belt alternation system and it includes the same suspension system as the gas only XE models. This hybrid variety provides 164 horsepower and the advantage of an important improvement in terms of fuel consume. In order to encourage the purchase of ecological cars so as to save or preserve the environment, governmental laws regulate a $1,300 tax credit drop. This means that after you purchase the Saturn Aura hybrid you’ll save the above mentioned sum that you’d otherwise pay for taxes.

Saturn Vue

December 20th, 2008

The SUV produced by General Motors, called Saturn Vue was the best-sold Saturn car until the summer of 2008 when the launch of the Aura model led to a sales drop. Saturn Vue is a pioneer in the car making industry as the first vehicle to be equipped with a GM Theta platform. Several Saturn Vue generations are presently available on the market, and people buy them either directly from dealers or through auctions and classifieds as second-hand cars. In terms of design, there are some common features between Saturn Vue and Opel Antara, Pontiac Torrent and Chevrolet Equinox, and the one-body unitary platform is just one such element.

Since the launch of Saturn Vue in 2002, models passed from 4-cylinder to 6-cylinder design which brought a significant superiority in terms of horsepower, which now reached 186kW. The 4-cylinder Saturn Vue vehicles were manufactured until 2005 when General Motors decided to focus on producing more powerful cars exclusively. Another modification occurred in 2006 when Saturn Vue received a face-lift and considerable upgrades in the interior design concept. Thus, besides the cosmetic trifles that were also added, the quality of the materials was significantly improved. From then on, automatic headlights and cruise control became standard in Saturn Vue models.

Additionally, General Motors decided to produce Saturn Vue cars in two other special lines: the red line and the green line. The former is designed for high performance with improved horsepower and includes sportier features; moreover, the black leather seats, the high-quality visual updates, the ground effect front bumpers and the special audio system make this Saturn Vue vehicle fall in the luxury category. It goes without saying that the fuel consume is higher than with the regular Saturn SUV, and so is the price of the vehicle.

As for the Saturn Vue green line, this is the environment-oriented design that is actually a hybrid model relying of a combination between an internal combustion engine and an electrical motor. The electrical motor is in charge of the stops and restarts of the car; it brings the great advantage of quieter driving and reduced fuel consume. So far, a 20% saving has been measured on the average, but on the long run the initial investment is worth appreciating. The only disadvantage with the Saturn Vue hybrid model is the high price as compared to regular vehicles. Even if in time one gets repaid by the low fuel consume, the financial difficulty of the purchase remains a reality for the average buyer.

Johnny Saturn

December 19th, 2008

Johnny Saturn is a very well-known web comic, the creation of Benita and Scott Story. There is a main super-hero tale at the core with a mystery man that’s been through lots of challenges in a life where there is an eternal battle between the forces of good and evil. Hence, the typology of the characters to be found in Johnny Saturn is similar to any Romantic plot with myths, angels, demons and lots of conflicts between them. But there are also mad scientists and demigods as well as all sorts of conceptual beings, making up the puzzle world that is the very charm of the Johnny Saturn comic.

In terms of basic characterization, Johnny Saturn is both a web comic and a superhero and fantasy book; yet, many readers see it as a sheer allegory of the strenuous efforts a common man makes in his way to find justice. On top of these all, we could also identify a deeper philosophy according to which good can be achieved through bad deeds too.

Johnny Saturn is an average person who faces the evil Dr. Synn and his plots. Johnny Saturn is not the prototype of the hero with lots of powers and plenty of heroic tales to tell: he is the regular guy trapped in uncommon circumstances who has to do what he has to do. As the story in the comic moves on, Johnny Saturn gets to other inspirational life levels: he becomes a savior and even a leader.

The makers of the Johnny Saturn comic got something more than popularity with their ongoing story of the character. The Storys manage to be witty and interesting in creating moods, profound messages and lots of complexity without assaulting the reader with visual tricks. Mondays and Wednesdays are normally the days when the story of Johnny Saturn is told further on; it’s been four years since the release of the strip, and it still enjoys an ongoing success as several thousands of visitors read the adventures of Johnny Saturn daily.

Johnny Saturn is imbued with the concepts, issues and controversies of our world: yes there is drug addiction, depression, suicide, anger, grief and lots of others, but they are all approached in a very straight-forward manner without dramatizing. Even political themes get to underlie the story of Johnny Saturn, but the advantage here is that a comic allows room enough for allegories without hinting directly at real characters or events.

Saturn

December 19th, 2008

When we say Saturn, we say the giant-ringed planet that by looks is the most attractive in the solar system. It is also on top of the largest planets, coming second after Jupiter, not to mention that it has several satellites as big as Earth or even larger. First discovered by Galileo, Saturn is now better known thanks to the exploration of the mission Voyager that brought most of the info on rotation specificity, planet morphology and even allowed for a rough and basic analysis of the surface. Thus, Saturn spins very quickly around its axis, and the day is only 10 hours and 39 minutes long. But since it is farther from the sun, the revolution spin takes about 29.5 Earth years to complete.

The dominant gas in Saturn’s atmosphere is hydrogen, but small amounts of helium and methane are also present. If we were to think about the possibility of life developing on this planet similarly to Earth’s life conditions, we have to admit that it is very unlikely. Saturn has a lower density than water; thus, were there a lake or ocean, Saturn would be floating in it. The possibility to sustain life has not been excluded in reference to Saturn’s satellites, though, but studies are in progress, and until we have more conclusive data, all remains pure speculation.

Another planetary feature that attracts one’s attention on Saturn is the high wind; imagine wind blowing at about 1,100 miles per hour in the equator area. But at first glance, nothing seems as spectacular on Saturn as the ring system that surrounds the planet. Three different sectors have been identified in the rings: we can actually speak of three rings in fact, with two brighter and one fainter. Space probes sent to study this unique planetary characteristics have revealed that each so-called ring consists of a large number of smaller ones, and that there are gaps between or inside the main ones too.

The exact origin of the rings of Saturn remains unexplained; what makes them so special is that many of them are smaller or larger icebergs, including a significant amount of water. Other ring sectors consist of dust mainly that present characteristics of electrostatic charging, thus allowing for the formation of spokes. Three are made of very fine dust particles, which are usually short-lived as the spokes merely dissipate. Then, there is a close relation between some of the rings and smaller Saturn moons that seem to influence the dust presence in certain areas. Moreover, the discovery of Saturn’s natural satellites is only at the beginning; who knows what surprises there may be in stock out there?
